- Description: Datadog starts at $15/host/month. Grafana Cloud Pro is $19/month plus usage. At managed scale they land within 2% of each other - the real differences are custom-metric billing, cardinality, and who operates the stack.

**TL;DR**

- **Datadog** list price starts at **$15/host/month** for Infrastructure Pro on an annual commit ($18 on-demand), plus **$31/host/month** for APM. **Grafana Cloud Pro** is **$19/month** platform fee plus usage — metrics from **$6.50 per 1k active series**, logs and traces at **$0.40/GB** written.
- At managed-SaaS parity the two land closer than the internet assumes. Our 40-host model below comes out at roughly **$1,910/month for Datadog vs $1,880/month for Grafana Cloud**. Grafana's decisive cost win is its **free tier** and self-hosting, not its paid tier.
- Datadog includes only **100 custom metrics per host** on Pro (200 on Enterprise) and **does not publish the overage rate** — this is the single most common cause of a surprise Datadog bill.
- **Pick Grafana** if you want OSS control, Prometheus-native metrics, or a genuinely usable free tier. **Pick Datadog** if you want one vendor, deep out-of-the-box APM, and no one on staff to run a metrics backend.

**Grafana vs Datadog** comes down to one trade: Grafana gives you an open, composable stack you assemble and partly operate yourself; Datadog gives you a single integrated SaaS platform and charges per host for it. Grafana wins on free-tier generosity, licence freedom and dashboard flexibility. Datadog wins on breadth, out-of-the-box APM depth and operational simplicity.

Worth stating plainly: every non-forum result currently ranking for this query is published either by Grafana Labs or by a competing observability vendor selling a third option. Edgewisely sells neither.

## What does Grafana vs Datadog pricing actually cost in 2026?

Both publish list prices. Here are the load-bearing numbers, all US-region annual-commit rates.

**Datadog** ([pricing page](https://www.datadoghq.com/pricing/?ref=edgewisely.com)):

| Product | Annual commit | On-demand |
| ------------------------- | ------------------------------- | --------- |
| Infrastructure Pro | **$15**/host/mo | $18 |
| Infrastructure Enterprise | **$23**/host/mo | $27 |
| APM (with Infra) | **$31**/host/mo | $36 |
| Log ingest | **$0.10**/GB | $0.10 |
| Log indexing, 15-day | **$1.70**/million events | $2.55 |
| Log indexing, 30-day | **$2.50**/million events | $3.75 |
| Indexed spans, 15-day | **$1.70**/million | $2.55 |
| Flex Logs storage | **$0.05**/million events stored | $0.075 |

**Grafana Cloud Pro** ([pricing page](https://grafana.com/pricing/?ref=edgewisely.com)) is a **$19/month** platform fee plus usage above the free allowances:

| Product | Pro rate |
| ------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------- |
| Metrics | from **$6.50** / 1k active series |
| Logs, traces, profiles | **$0.40**/GB write, $0.10/GB retain, $0.05/GB process |
| Grafana dashboards | **$8** / active user |
| Application Observability | **$0.025**/host hour (\~$18/host/mo) |
| Kubernetes Monitoring | **$0.01**/host hour (\~$7.20/host/mo) |
| IRM (on-call) | **$20** / active user |

Grafana Enterprise starts at a **$25,000/year spend commit**, where metrics fall to **as low as $3 per 1k series**. Datadog offers volume discounts above 500 hosts.

### A worked model: 40 hosts

Analysis, not a quote. Assumptions: 40 hosts, APM on all of them, 400 GB logs/month at 15-day retention, 20M log events indexed, 100 GB traces, 150k active metric series, 12 dashboard users. List prices, annual commit, no negotiated discount.

- **Datadog:** $600 infra + $1,240 APM + $40 log ingest + $34 indexing ≈ **$1,914/month**
- **Grafana Cloud Pro:** $19 platform + \~$910 metrics + \~$192 logs + \~$28 traces + \~$666 App Observability + $72 seats ≈ **$1,876/month**

That is a \~2% gap. Anyone telling you Grafana Cloud is dramatically cheaper than Datadog at equivalent managed scale is selling something.

The model flips hard on **cardinality**. Take that 150k series to 500k and Grafana adds roughly **$3,200/month** in metrics alone, while Datadog's host count doesn't move — the cost lands in custom metrics instead, which is where the trouble starts.

## Where Datadog bills go wrong

Two billing dimensions cause most Datadog bill shock, and neither is the per-host price people quote.

**Custom metrics.** Infrastructure Pro includes **100 custom metrics per host**; Enterprise includes 200\. Datadog's own FAQ states custom metrics are counted hourly and averaged monthly across the whole account, not per host. Beyond the allowance, the pricing page gives no rate at all — it says contact sales. A team tagging metrics by pod, request ID or customer can generate tens of thousands of series against a 4,000-metric allowance without noticing.

**Indexed logs.** Ingest is cheap at $0.10/GB. Indexing is the expensive half, and it scales with **event count**, not bytes. Twenty million chatty debug lines cost the same to index as twenty million meaningful ones. Flex Logs at **$0.05 per million events stored** exists precisely because customers balked at 30-day indexing at $2.50.

Grafana's equivalent trap is the reverse: active series. Its Adaptive Metrics and Adaptive Logs features exist to drop unused telemetry, which tells you the problem is real on both sides. The same structural tension shows up in our [Datadog vs Splunk comparison](https://edgewisely.com/datadog-vs-splunk/?ref=edgewisely.com), where ingest-versus-index pricing is the whole argument.

## Is Grafana better than Datadog for dashboards?

Yes, for most teams — and this is the least contested part of the comparison. Grafana ships **170+ data sources and 120+ visualisation panels** as of Grafana 13, and it queries systems it doesn't own: Prometheus, Elasticsearch, Snowflake, BigQuery, CloudWatch, even Datadog itself.

Datadog dashboards are good and require zero setup, but they visualise Datadog data. That's the design.

Grafana 13, which shipped **21 April 2026** at GrafanaCON in Barcelona, added suggested dashboards, DORA and USE/RED layout templates, generally available dynamic dashboards, and 2-way Git sync for GitHub, GitLab and Bitbucket. Grafana 13.1 followed in June 2026 with expanded Git Sync and Assistant coverage.

One cost note people miss: Grafana Cloud charges **$8 per active dashboard user** above three. Datadog charges nothing for dashboard viewers.

## Does Grafana support logs and traces like Datadog?

Yes, via separate components rather than one product. The stack is **Loki** (logs), **Mimir** (metrics), **Tempo** (traces), **Pyroscope** (profiling) and **Alloy** (collector). All five are real, maintained projects.

Two operational facts to get right: **Grafana Agent reached end of life on 1 November 2025** and **Promtail reached EOL in March 2026**. Alloy is the only supported collector path now. If you are running either, you are on unsupported software.

At GrafanaCON 2026 Grafana Labs announced a [redesigned Loki architecture](https://grafana.com/press/2026/04/21/grafana-labs-launches-grafana-13-at-grafanacon-2026-makes-open-observability-easier-to-run-at-scale/?ref=edgewisely.com) with Kafka-backed ingestion and a new query planner, claiming up to 20x less data scanned and 10x faster aggregated queries. It also acquired Logline for needle-in-haystack log search.

Datadog's advantage here is integration, not capability. Logs, traces, metrics and profiles correlate out of the box because one vendor built all of them.

## Can Grafana replace Datadog — and what does self-hosting really cost?

Functionally yes. Financially, only if you are honest about labour.

The LGTM stack is free to licence. It is not free to run. Self-hosting Mimir and Loki at production scale means object storage, compute, capacity planning, upgrade cycles, on-call for your observability system, and someone who actually understands the ingester/querier split. That is a standing fraction of an engineer's time, permanently.

A useful anchor: Grafana Labs itself prices managed Enterprise at a **$25,000/year floor**. If your fully loaded self-hosting cost — infrastructure plus engineer time — exceeds that, you are paying a premium for control, not saving money.

The licence matters too. Grafana, Loki, Mimir, Tempo and Pyroscope were [relicensed from Apache 2.0 to AGPLv3 in 2021](https://grafana.com/blog/grafana-loki-tempo-relicensing-to-agplv3/?ref=edgewisely.com) and remain AGPLv3 today. For internal use that changes nothing. If you plan to embed Grafana in a product you sell, AGPL's network-use copyleft clause is a legal conversation, not a footnote. Alloy and most plugins stay Apache-2.0.

## Does OpenTelemetry reduce lock-in on either side?

Substantially, and 2026 was the year this stopped being theoretical. OpenTelemetry graduated from the CNCF in May 2026.

**Datadog** now accepts OTLP through the standard OTLP HTTP Exporter — no Datadog Exporter required — and its direct OTLP intake endpoint is now generally available, meaning you can send metrics, logs and traces with no agent or collector in between. Kubernetes Explorer and APM are populated by OTel-native data.

![Diagram of Datadog's direct OTLP intake endpoint receiving metrics, logs and traces without an intermediate agent or collector](https://storage.ghost.io/c/54/5a/545a66b3-60ef-480c-80ae-765bac52f6ec/content/images/2026/09/grafana-vs-datadog-inbody.jpg)

Diagram: [Datadog](https://www.datadoghq.com/blog/native-otel-with-datadog/?ref=edgewisely.com)

**Grafana's Alloy** is a distribution of the OTel Collector, and its new OpenTelemetry Engine mode accepts standard OTel Collector YAML directly.

Practical upshot: instrument with OTel SDKs and your instrumentation is portable both ways. Your dashboards, alerts and monitors are not. That is where the real switching cost now sits.

## What changed in 2026?

**Datadog** reported [Q2 2026 revenue of $1.12 billion, up 36% year over year](https://www.nasdaq.com/press-release/datadog-announces-second-quarter-2026-financial-results-2026-08-06?ref=edgewisely.com), with about **4,720 customers at $100,000+ ARR**, up 23% from roughly 3,850 a year earlier, and full-year guidance of **$4.45–4.47 billion**. At DASH 2026 it shipped 100+ capabilities including autonomous Bits AI, AI Guard, Bring Your Own Cloud, and GA for Bits Code, Bits Chat and Bits Agent Builder. It also acquired Adaptive ML.

**Grafana Labs** shipped Grafana 13 and 13.1, the Loki redesign, Pyroscope 2.0, and says it passed **35 million users** and 10,000+ Grafana Cloud organisations. Both companies were named Leaders in the 2026 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Observability Platforms.

On AI observability, Datadog's Agent Observability is free to 40k LLM spans/month then **$160/month** for 100k spans on an annual commit. Grafana's Agent Observability is **$1.50 per 1k generations** with 30k free monthly. Both are newer and thinner than the specialists we cover in [Langfuse vs LangSmith](https://edgewisely.com/langfuse-vs-langsmith/?ref=edgewisely.com).

## What this means for you

**If you're a solo dev or early-stage startup:** Grafana Cloud free tier, no contest. 10k active series, 50 GB logs, 50 GB traces, 3 users, forever. Datadog's free tier caps at 5 hosts with 1-day retention, which is a trial, not a tier.

**If you run a platform team of 20–100 hosts:** the managed costs are close enough that price shouldn't decide it. Choose on team skills. Already Prometheus-native with PromQL fluency? Grafana. Want APM depth with nobody to operate a metrics backend? Datadog.

**If you have an SRE team and high metric cardinality:** self-hosted Mimir and Loki, with Grafana Cloud for the visualisation layer if you prefer. Cardinality is exactly where per-series SaaS pricing punishes you hardest.

**If you're a regulated enterprise:** Datadog, unless you specifically need data residency Datadog can't offer. Its BYOC option narrows that gap in 2026.

**If you're already on Datadog and the bill hurts:** audit custom metrics and indexed log events before you migrate. Those two lines, not the per-host price, are usually the problem — and Flex Logs plus metric-tag pruning can fix it without a replatform. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is Grafana cheaper than Datadog?

At the free tier, dramatically. On paid managed plans, barely. Our 40-host list-price model puts Grafana Cloud at roughly $1,880/month against Datadog's $1,914/month. Self-hosted Grafana eliminates licence cost entirely but adds permanent engineering labour, which is the honest comparison most pricing pages skip.

### Can Grafana replace Datadog?

Functionally yes. Loki, Mimir, Tempo and Pyroscope cover logs, metrics, traces and profiling, and Grafana visualises all of it. You lose Datadog's out-of-the-box correlation and single-vendor support, and you gain operational responsibility. Teams with Prometheus experience make this switch successfully; teams without one usually shouldn't.

### Is Grafana Cloud free?

Yes, permanently, with real limits: 10,000 active metric series, 50 GB each of logs, traces and profiles per month, 3 active users, 3 active AI users, and 14-day retention. No credit card. It is enough to monitor a small production stack, which is more than most vendor free tiers manage.

### Does Grafana support logs and traces like Datadog?

Yes, through separate components rather than one bundled product. Loki handles logs, Tempo handles traces, and both integrate in Grafana dashboards. Note that Grafana Agent hit end of life on 1 November 2025 and Promtail in March 2026 — Alloy is now the only supported collector.

**Editor's note — sources:** Datadog and Grafana Cloud list prices verified 30 September 2026 against each vendor's own pricing page (US region, annual-commit column). Datadog's custom-metric overage rate is genuinely unpublished — the pricing page directs you to sales, so no figure is quoted here. The 40-host cost model is Edgewisely analysis with all assumptions stated inline, not a quote from either vendor. Grafana Agent's 1 November 2025 end of life and Promtail's March 2026 EOL are from Grafana Labs' own deprecation notices. Datadog's Q2 2026 figures are from its earnings press release; Grafana 13's 21 April 2026 ship date and the Loki redesign are from Grafana Labs' GrafanaCON 2026 press release.
